Our Former Advocacy - brief

Note that this is no longer the path that we can take but we state here what was advocated since 2014:

Ukraine should be a bridge to Russia and not a wall with the United States and the European Union.

Every country involved in the 2014 mess in Ukraine has made mistakes. In order to find a lasting solution that advances peace and prosperity in Ukraine while also keeping the interests of all the other countries involved we should have a change in mentality among the key decision makers involved. To bring this change there needs to be coordination among those people in think tanks, academia, media who share the principle that cooperation and not friction should be the modus operandi of international relations.

The United States and the European Union should engage Russia as a partner in making Ukraine a better place.

ISRAEL & IRAN:
For over 20 years Andreas Karas advocated

for actions that would have brought sustainable peace in the Middle East by bridging first the main rivalry, between Iran and Israel.

  Introduction:

EmbracePeace.org got more attention from important institutions and influential people when it became evident that both its predictions in 2014 came true. By not taking the actions we should to prevent the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Iran wars we failed the millions who lost their lives or got crippled or those hundreds of millions of poor people around the world who had a material impact in their lives from the global economic impact of these wars.

Is it not incredible that in 2025 we spent almost US$ 3 trillion in armaments, while we have around 10 million dying from hunger every year, half of them children. To put in perspective: if we were to divert 1/3rd of global defence expenses that would correspond to US$ 100,000 for each of these 10 million people who die every year.

While we are trying to figure out the current mess with wars around the world, not only the ones catching the global media attention, but also all those many others who do not: We need to rally those who truly care for peace to work together and convert potential hotspots of friction to bridges of cooperation: It is almost always that the biggest friction exists between peoples who are otherwise close otherwise, not just living side by side; and the Ukraine / Russia war is an unfortunate good example of that.

The above was a preamble, an introduction to the arguments of dealing with the Taiwan question now. Imagine the level of cooperation between the United States and China that can exist if Taiwan was not the thorny issue it is, which otherwise makes no sense:

Simple facts on Taiwan that suggests reunification as the only logical choice:

· Taiwan, officially “The Republic of China”, is more ethnically Chinese than big part of China.

· An island of 23 million people, Taiwan’s population is around 1.5% that of China’s 1.4 billion people.

· The U.S. "One China" policy recognizes the People's Republic of China (PRC) as the sole legal government of China and acknowledges Beijing's position that Taiwan is part of China.

Taiwan’s cultural importance to China is multifold, including:

· Shared Heritage & Ancestry: Most Taiwanese have ancestral links to mainland China, specifically coastal provinces like Fujian and Guangdong.

· Traditional Chinese Preservation: Unlike mainland China, Taiwan did not undergo major political upheavals like the Cultural Revolution. Therefore, it preserves traditional Chinese characters, folk religions (Buddhism, Taoism), and Confucian values.

· Religious Ties: Mazu worship and other traditional temples are prevalent on both sides of the strait, serving as common ground and community hubs.

· Literature & Arts: Traditional literature, calligraphy, and poetry in literary Hokkien are still active in Taiwan, representing a continuity of tradition that some see as more authentic than the mainland's modern practices.

Taiwan should be a bridge in the US-China relationship and not a wall

Given the above, why do we then have allowed for decades this issue simmering as the core hotspot of friction in East Asia having close to US$700 billion being spent by China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea every year, without accounting the US$ 100s of billions that US is spending indirectly in relation to this friction?

Removing the Taiwan question from the US – China relationship can be done in tandem with dealing with many of the other bilateral disagreements between the world’s two main superpowers. Actually, there is every reason to argue that China can be more flexible on other US interests if in return receives US cooperation on what matters most to its self identity.

Taiwan - A path to peace

· The first step is to recognize that if we do not have a compromise between US and China on Taiwan, inevitably sooner or later China will take over Taiwan. The impact of that on all nations involved and the world at large is difficult to assess today, but we should all acknowledge is not the optimum option.

· Given the above, if we accept that we need to align a path to reunification of Taiwan into China, a big breakthrough will already have been achieved. The “One China” policy of the US actually acknowledges that long term path, but now we do have to make it more tangible.

· It took a strong UK leader, Margaret Thatcher to see the need for the Hong Kong question to be put to rest and then it took 12.5 years from the day UK agreed to the day Hong Kong reunified with the mainland.  In the interim period a lot took place to smooth that transition. That could be a model path for Taiwan.
